August, 27th, 2010: Toni Gardner, Field Representative with the California’s Corrections Standards Authority (CSA), will introduce the topic and lead us in discussion on "Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Youth in an Evolving Juvenile Detention System." Many of us have no doubt worked with youngsters who were threatened by their parents or with parents who threatened their youngster with a stay in Juvenile Hall. When parents feel incapable of controlling their youngster and do not understand the purpose of juvenile detention, they may make such a threat.
Questions for discussion:
- What is the purpose of secure detention for juveniles? Is the purpose different than the purpose of county jail?
- How does the therapist go about visiting a teen client who is detained?
- What are the legal mandates for Juvenile Halls to meet the mental health needs of youth?
- What programs or services and service models have been shown to be most beneficial for these youth?
- Which of these criteria best defines “recidivism” for you? No re-arrests; No new court actions upheld; No re-entry to Juvenile Hall.
- Over what period of time would you consider that the juvenile is not likely to re-offend? 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, until age 18 or age 21?
- What types of offenses may lead to a return to Juvenile Hall? What offenses might the juvenile commit that do not necessarily lead to a repeat detention?
- When is a suicide in juvenile detention most likely to happen?
Toni Gardner has worked with the CSA since 2007. She is assigned to the Facilities Standards and Operations division and is responsible for biennial inspections of local juvenile detention facilities. She joined CSA after a fifteen-year career with Santa Cruz County Probation, the last six years as an assistant division director. During that time, she managed the Watsonville probation office and participated in BASTA (Broad-based Apprehension Suppression and Treatment Alternatives, a collaborative between the Watsonville law enforcement, social service agencies and community-based organizations. The focus was on gang issues in the south county area.
Café CAMFT provides a venue for you to meet your colleagues in an atmosphere of diversity, enthusiasm, and warm peer support. Bring your questions and personal experiences. The facilitator starts the discussion with a 15-20 minute exploration on the theme and the group does the rest.
To volunteer to speak on a topic of your own or to suggest a topic, contact Sylvia Yee or Connie Grimes at CafeCAMFT. We also invite members to join the Café Team to participate in the organization and production of this stimulating and important ongoing activity. Café CAMFT is provided to you by Santa Cruz CAMFT members.
We open each Café meeting by "checking in" so people have an opportunity to introduce themselves and share current information. There is also a drawing for a free lunch, so bring your business card.
We hope to see you there!
