Let's talk about the Business and Marketing of a Private Practice – with Licia Ginne, Psy.D., MFT

No one ever told me I’d have to work at creating a private practice, it never crossed my mind and it certainly was not addressed in graduate school or any internship I ever held. Now is the time to position yourself for success, whether student, intern, newly licensed or seasoned professional.

Learn from my mistakes and successes. I have been in private practice for 30+ years and working in the mental health field for 40 years. This is a very big topic and I will try my best to give an overview, as well as focus on topics of interest to the group. Here are some of the topics I will cover:

  • Identifying who you are as a therapist and business person.
  • What do you want out of an internship? What to look for in an internship.
  • The basics of running a business.
  • What do you want your private practice to do for you?
  • Marketing – how to design a marketing plan that gently pushes at your comfort zones.
  • You’d be surprised at how many marketing tools you already use.
  • Insurance panels, some or none at all.
  • Have you set office policies with you in mind?
  • Are you easy to find?
  • How do you set your fee?
  • What tools do you use: billing person or software, credit cards, practice management software?
  • Financial management, incorporate, retirement fund and setting financial goals.
  • About the Presenter:

Licia Ginne, Psy.D., MFT – For the past 27 years I have run a successful private practice in Santa Monica, California. I closed up my practice and moved to Santa Cruz, California. To be accurate, my practice wasn't always successful. In the 1980s I started to learn all I could about private practice. I put in hours networking, learning from other therapists, taking marketing classes for therapists (not many were around in the early 1980s), and read marketing books and learning from my accountants.

My practice was working and I wanted to teach what I had learned about practice development. I met up with Howard Ronder, MFTI, who was working in marketing and graphic design. We collaborated and came up with a marketing program directed at therapists. Even our marketing workshop had a rocky start and was put on hold. Howard decided to return to his creative world of design and marketing. I went on to offer workshops, presentations at CAMFT Chapters, conferences and to consult with those seeking a private practice or clinic all across the country.
